Cause

All proceeds from our
2017 show will go directly to
Meals on Wheels of Anderson.

Meals on Wheels prepares and delivers approximately 400 hot meals each weekday to citizens of Anderson County who are not capable of preparing meals for themselves. By providing this service, Meals on Wheels assists the home bound elderly and disabled in maintaining their health, independence, and quality of life. Nutrition is extremely important to maintain good health and Meals on Wheels provides 1/3 of the daily nutritional requirements for participants. Many would not be able to stay in their own homes without the assistance provided by the agency and its many volunteers.

The Mission:

To deliver meals to the disabled or elderly homebound in Anderson County.

Our vision is that no disabled or elderly homebound individual in Anderson County goes hungry.

HOW WE BEGAN:

Organized in June 1976, the program has grown from delivering 30 meals per day to an average of 400 meals per week day and 75 frozen meals on weekends. Hot, nutritious, and delicious meals are prepared and packed five days a week at the William Law Watkins Meals on Wheels Center.

HOW WE DO IT:

Each weekday, approximately 90 volunteers work in our kitchen, deliver meals, and help with scheduling and other office duties to provide the services many elderly and disabled in the community rely upon.  All total, over 450 volunteers give of their time to help the program succeed.  Volunteers come from all walks of life–retirees, those in the workforce who want to give something back to the community, and students in public and private schools as well as those who are home schooled.

Family members, agencies, churches, hospitals, physicians and neighbors refer possible participants.  Trained volunteers follow up with a visit to determine eligibility. This eligibility is based on need for assistance, not income guidelines.

HOW WE'RE FUNDED

Operation of the agency relies on donations received from the community. Because of our frugal operation, Meals on Wheels prepares and delivers meals at a cost of about $5.15 per meal. That figure includes food, salaries, utilities – all costs associated with providing each meal.

The program receives no federal or state funds; therefore, Meals on Wheels depends on the generosity of the community for its survival. Ours is truly a program of “neighbors helping neighbors.”

With the donations typically generated by 24 Hour Musical, Meals on Wheels will be able to provide upwards of 400 meals for disabled and elderly homebound residents of Anderson County.
